Morocco Clubbing

Giles Brown, marbellas.com’s nightlife correspondent, hops over the Straits for a spot of clubbing in the Maghreb.

Morocco has always struck me as the kind of place that is fine as a day trip – a quick blast across the Straits, buy a rug, drink mint tea, ride a camel and get back before nightfall. The opening of Snob, a nightclub boasting a state-of-the-art sound and light system, however, means that there is something new to rock the Kasbah.

Snob’s owners, brothers Yunes and Lorenzo Boucetta have spared no expense with their new nightclub. At the opening they invited the crème de la crème of Tangier and Marbella’s clubbing hierarchy to the event. Everyone enjoyed the full red carpet treatment including chauffeur driven stretch limos and Hummers!

A Bijou Club Experience
Small but perfectly formed would be an apt description of the interior. With several booths and tables, Snob would best be described as civilized clubbing. There is a small dance floor, but the club is more suited to the lounge crowd than those who want to go raving all night. A raver would look out of place anyway as the dress code veers towards smart trendy designer style for the 25 - 50 crowd.

Where Snob cannot be faulted however, is the sound and light. Yunes and Lorenzo have commissioned a 215, 000 light avant-garde system from Diseño Gatseleria, who have also installed systems in clubs including Cristal in London. (The very same designers who 2 years ago transformed the Hotel Don Carlos in Marbella into a haven of designer desirability, and who will be creating beauteous white spaces with the Nikki Beach Hotel expansion into Europe).

Snob bar tangiersBack in Tangiers, Snob also boasts some of the best Djs in Morocco, with Arabesque beats as well as R’n’B being effortlessly mixed on an impressive system.

Although Snob is located on Tangier’s busy seafront and the crowds may sometimes seem chaotic, there is no possibility of the wrong crowd finding their way into the club, due to some particularly impressive looking bouncers!

Tangier is a fascinating city to visit and, with the opening of Snob, it has a chic new place to party.

Note: If you want to go clubbing at Snob, marbellas.com recommends the fast ferry trip from Tarifa to Tangier as the best way to travel.

Stay at the Movenpick Hotel and Casino, which enjoys fantastic views across the bay towards the port, but is away from the Tangier crowds. Facilities also include a health spa and great casino.
