La Quinta Academy

On a sunny but slightly chilly morning with the mountains behind Marbella showing snowy peaks, junior golfers the "La Quinta Tigers" were joined by Children from the charity Aspandem.  Former British PGA Open Champion, Ryder Cup Player and resident Professional at La Quinta, Manuel Piñero gave a Golf Clinic to the aspiring young golfers at the La Quinta Golf Academy. As well as demonstrating various professional golfing techniques, Manuel showed his repertoire of golf tricks developed over the years to the wows of the crowd. Following the demonstration some of the children were given a short one-to-one lesson on golf basics and the importance of keeping your head still throughout the swing.

 

Aspandem

The Aspandem Charity was formed by group of parents of mentally handicapped children on the Costa del Sol in 1980. Their intention was to join together to support each other and other children who were suffering in the same way. Since its beginnings 30 years ago, Aspandem has helped hundreds of children and continues to do so through the enthusiasm given by its volunteers. Aspandem have a shop located in San Pedro where all proceeds go directly to help the mentally handicapped. (See details below).

 

The La Quinta Tigers Academy

Founded in 1990 and headed by Manuel Piñero La Quinta Golf Academy offers junior golfers everything they need to help them on their way to a low handicap. Everyone knows golf is a complicated game requiring dedication and the mastering of very specific techniques and skills. At the recently formed junior coaching school, known as the La Quinta Tigers Academy, the 'Cubs' fast learn the skills, temperament and etiquette required to become a good golfer. Classes, every Saturday are held between 10am and 12pm for eight year olds upwards and from 12pm to 1.30pm for the five to eight year old group. With a minimum of three tutors at any one time on location the children are well looked after and soon feel at home in the 'golf environment'. With a series of group classes the boys and girls are shown all aspects of the game from putting, long and short iron shots and bunker techniques. Several times throughout the season Manuel Piñero gives one of his golf clinics and at the end of the season there is a golf Tournament for the juniors where they compete against each other and demonstrate all they have learned.  

Enjoyment
All the children from Aspandem and the 'Tigers' enjoyed the demonstrations by 'Manolo', the environment of the Academy and the friendliness of all the staff at La Quinta Golf.
