Thousands Raised for Haiti

The generosity and charity of hundreds of people living and visiting Marbella knows no bounds. With a golf tournament at held Estepona Golf followed by an incredible gala dinner at La Quinta golf, thousands of euros have been raised in another push for the troubled citizens of Haiti.

12th January 2010
After watching the world news and the plight of the Haiti people, Rory Leader owner of Estepona Golf, decided he would hold a competition day at his course and donate all proceeds to help those effected by the devastating earthquake of 12 January 2010. The quake mainly struck the Capital city of Port-au-Prince reportedly killing over 170,000 people, destroying an untold amount of homes, businesses and in some cases wiping out whole families. It has left the Republic in a situation of complete despair with about one million people homeless.

Talk Radio Europe
Rory and the Estepona Golf team put together the golf tournament and contacted Maurice Boland with the thought that he may be able to promote his idea through his radio station. Jumping at the chance to raise money for a worthy cause Maurice in turn suggested a Gala Dinner and promptly called on as many of his UK celebrity friends as he could to help with the fund raising events. Within no time the Charity team had an agreement with La Quinta Golf to hold a gala dinner and a date was set.

5th February 2010
Rain, rain, rain... with 24 hours to go with rivers bursting their banks all over the Costa del Sol there were sudden doubts as to whether the Tournament could take place but with a determined smile Rory kept his course open for the Haiti day when most other golf courses were forced to close due to flooding. On the morning of the 5th a few entrants cried off, but most played. So determined to help the cause, a few golfers arrived Estepona Golf just to pay the green fees with no intention of actually playing. It was wet under foot, the players slipped and slided, but it was part of the day and only added to the element of achievement. Celebrities on the course include Kenny Lynch, Stan Boardman and Mike England, all of whom are avid fund raisers.

La Quinta Gala Dinner
The prize giving was held during the Gala Dinner at La Quinta and first prize was awarded to Mike England and his partner and friend, the World Champion snooker player Dennis Taylor. They scored a "two ball, better ball" total of 44 points, beating local boys Clive and Eralio on a count back. The evening's entertainment was spectacular including singing by Wow Factor winners Christian Fa and Rebecca Tate, Stephen Lloyd-Morgan, The Gospel Choir, and comedy pieces Stan Boardman and Kenny Lynch. A raffle was organised with an array of prizes including for a night for two at the Hotel Hermitage in Casares. Maurice Boland raised another 3,500€ with his auctioneering skills for a break to the luxurious old English hotel, The Welcome in Stratford upon Avon, Warwickshire with flights included courtesy of Monarch Airlines.
