It is no coincidence that La Cantera is the chosen venue for a series of high profile concert dates outlined this week at the Casino Marbella. With the likes of Julio Iglesias, Paul Anka, Tony Bennett, George Benson and Hugh Laurie on the roster, Marbella is clearly aiming to repeat the glory days of the 90s boom when the world’s jet-set would flood into Marbella to enjoy concerts in the very same venue – forged in the very rock quarried to create Puerto Banús three decades ago.
Yes, the Starlite Festival, brought to Marbella by the organizers of the glamorous Starlite Gala, is all set to put Marbella at centre stage in terms of Spain’s entertainment calendar this summer.
With some of Spain’s biggest international stars lined up to perform – Raphael, Lolita, Antonio Carmona and Miguel Bosé, along with international names such as Christopher Cross and Roger Hodgson, the Starlite Festival should be a huge pull this summer for holidaymakers choosing a destination.
The Starlite Festival kicks off on 14th July with a concert by George Benson, no stranger to performing in Marbella, and one of the town’s best-loved artists.

The concerts of Roger Hodgson 16 July and Christopher Cross 17 July – are the only dates to be played in Spain this summer and will no doubt attract large crowds. Meanwhile the appearance of Hugh Laurie July 29, will bring fans from all over Europe for the one-off date. 30 July sees music legend Paul Anka – writer of Sinatra’s My Way, among a host of universally successful hits, take to the stage with his unmistakable showmanship.
The tempo changes on 9 August with 80s super group Simple Minds. And with Raphael, one of Spain’s best-loved singers performing on 11 August followed by the king of croon, none other than Julio Iglesias on 12 August, and popular group Estopa on 14 August, the Starlite Festival aims to go out with a bang.
Paco Roncero, the chef of world-renowned restaurant El Bulli will be creating a menu of stellar tapas to add to the sublime experience. The experimental restaurant expects to serve in the region of 45,000 tapas to La Cantera’s elite crowds.

Sandwiched in the middle of the festival, attracting the world’s high society, the Starlite Festival should go along way to restore Marbella’s glamour rating.
