Flower Power

Chinese-born artist, Zhuang Hong Yi, comes to Marbella’s Houses of Art this summer to showcase a collection of works inspired by his travels across the globe. Drawing inspiration from the natural world, he aims to capture the hearts of the town’s avid art lovers with a fusion of floral delights until 10 August 2010.
On 9 July, Houses of Art, Marbella welcomed art enthusiasts from around the region as contemporary artist, Zhuang Hong Yi, opened the exclusive exhibition of his latest works. On arrival, all guests were treated to a complimentary cocktail before being the first to marvel at the abstract offerings of the talented transnational artist.
Multi-talented
Despite growing up in the Sichuan province, China, Zhuang Hong Yi now works from his studio in Amsterdam. His paintings reflect his past yet combine elements of his now multicultural lifestyle. Many of his works are based on the use of rice paper, however thanks to his latest experiences in the Netherlands, his works are ever-evolving and he is always looking for new techniques.
Through rose-tinted eyes
Wherever Zuang goes, he soaks up the environment around him, processing each and every colour, shape and feel and approaching with a child-like innoncence, enthusiasm and intrigue. For example, a period of living in the Groningen countryside has helped him to create unique, original pieces, which echo the landscape’s sharply-defined, infinite horizons.
But as well as mirroring what he sees in reality, Zhuang likes to express his own take on the world. Viewed from a distance, first impressions of his works often convey a simple, harmonious and brightly coloured image. However, a closer look can reveal a whole lot more – think collages made up of smaller, more composed elements.
An international inspiration
Before bringing his collection to Marbella’s Houses of Art, Zhuang Hong Yi exhibited in a prestigious gallery in New York. He has also showcased his collections in museums such as Heerenveen and Zoetermeer Groningen and Beijing as well as a number of other galleries around the world. In 2008 the Chinese Ministry of Culture announced 150 of the world’s most talented Chinese-born artists and Zhuang Hong Yi is proud to be among them.
