These words by the Andalusian mystic Ibn Arabi (1165-1240) served as Bill Viola’s inspiration for his work Ocean without a Shore, which he presented at the Venice Biennale in 2007, and which was the origin for his seriesTransfigurations. The three works on display at Museo Picasso Málaga are part of this series.The installation project Bill Viola: Figurative Works is the first in a series of exhibitions aimed at showing the diverse forms of influence the Malaga-born artist had on some of the key artists in the recent history of Western art, as well as the Museum’s own examination of the relationships between Picasso and major artists who worked as from the second half of the 20th century. The project has been produced and organized by Museo Picasso Málaga, with the collaboration of the artist Kira Perov and the Bill Viola Studio, and the James Cohan Gallery, New York.

The three works on display at Museo Picasso Málaga are part of this series.The installation project Bill Viola: Figurative Works is the first in a series of exhibitions aimed at showing the diverse forms of influence the Malaga-born artist had on some of the key artists in the recent history of Western art, as well as the Museum’s own examination of the relationships between Picasso and major artists who worked as from the second half of the 20th century. The project has been produced and organized by Museo Picasso Málaga, with the collaboration of the artist Kira Perov and the Bill Viola Studio, and the James Cohan Gallery, New York.

(+34) 952 12 76 00.--The very first painting by Pablo Picasso that was ever conserved was painted in Malaga when he was just eight years old, and there is a horse in it. Ever since then, and right into his old age, the horse appears again and again in Picasso’s work. He depicted everything symbolic, noble, grotesque, human and mythological about the beast. In Picasso. Horses, the Museo Picasso Málaga provides a new look at the presence and meaning of these creatures in Picasso’s work, with over fifty artworks on display. Oil paintings, drawings and engravings, amongst other works, show the unique way the artist dealt with this subject and the various different forms in which he portrayed it.
