How did you get into fashion Julia?
My mother was a textile designer, so I grew up with an awareness of fabrics, colours, patterns and the allure of clothing…

What was the inspiration for Fashionvilla Marbella?
We are German, but we had a family home here in Marbella, and we had the idea to create a unique multi-brand experience for women living in and visiting Marbella. We wanted to offer women beautiful clothes that were not from the high street, or high fashion either – a happy half-way, and items you can’t find in other stores!  That was 7 years ago!

What makes fashion in Marbella different?
Because of the amazing climate, and the sunlight, people in Marbella tend to wear brighter colours – and the style is generally dress up, rather than dress down.  At cocktails and launches in northern Europe, jeans and boots are seen, but here it’s cocktail dresses.  Galas however, in Germany, are much more formal than here!

Can you describe an average day in your Fashionvilla world?
My days – and timetables vary enormously – which is great, no boring routines for me!
Sometimes I am up at 6am doing paperwork and planning outfits for my shows, searching the web for new brands and accessories. Then I have fittings with models, attend to clients during our normal opening hours, and then more often or not I have social engagements in the evenings – our own Fashionvilla events, charity dos, dinners, etcetera – nights at home are rare for me!

What is your personal fashion weakness?
I just love jackets – I have to keep buying them – blazers, military style, classic, edgy:
A good jacket can totally make an outfit!

What do you just love about Fashionvilla?
It is simply wonderful to help other women fulfill their dreams – you can see their confidence grow when they find the right outfit- change your style, change your life – it is so true!  Also, many of my lovely clients have become special friends – which is fabulous!

What does fashion contribute to our lives?
Look good – feel good!  Fashion gives women confidence and an outfit can totally change a woman’s body image.  A simple accessory can transform an old dress or suit into something really fashionable.  Fashion is a kind of magic wand to transform people, moods and add fun and colour to life!

What are your top 3 recommended fashion buys this season?
I would have to say animal print, outdoor jackets and blazers… there I go with the jackets again!  And slim fit trousers in black or camel… eternally elegant.  Oh!  And let’s not forget fur!  A fur hat, gloves, scarf or bag – that is a must this winter!

What is your ultimate fashion fantasy?
I am a big fan of Georgio Armani, so I would love to be involved in an Armani fashion show  – that would be a dream!

Events manager, DJ, business manager, host with the most, Johnnie B. Gomez is creating a buzz at Restaurante Güey in Marbella.

Since you partnered with the owners of Güey restaurant in Marbella, it has become the in place to be… what’s your secret?
My secret is having great passion for what I do – and having the best team in Marbella, Güey is a team effort!!

What events do you have planned at Güey in the next few months?
We have great things coming up in Güey (pronounced “Way”), The launch of our Tropical Summer Garden with a surprise international guest artist; The official election of Miss. & Mr. Marbella (for the Miss Spain organization) and many more surprises for all to enjoy!

You lived formerly in Madrid and New York, so why Marbella?

I was a partner in Music & Night Events S.L. in Madrid and we were hired as events managers in “Tibu Banús” some six years ago. One thing led to another, and we were hired for Bohemian Banús, and Plató 68. Coming from the big city, I would never have thought I would end up in a small place like Marbella, but this city and its people grow on you and I love it here for the moment. As long as I can do what I love which is creating cool events and surprising people, then I’ll be staying!

You come from a talented family, closely linked with the music business and film industry.  Do you think a life of glamour is in the genes?
I think my brother and my four sisters are the real talent in our family. I am just blessed to be part of such an amazing family. We have great creative genes… with a model and actress, fashion designer, make-up & hair stylist, teacher, welder and sculptor…

What do you think needs to be done to boost Marbella’s image as a world-class resort?
What we need is to forget about all the bad things that happened to Marbella in the past, and start afresh. Marbella is Spain’s answer to St. Tropez.

Is there anything we can do about the quiet winters?
Yes, we need to first stop thinking of Marbella as just a summer destination. Every year more people live and work here all year, so we need to also offer things in the winter season. The reason places like Güey and La Sala are working in the so-called “quiet seasons” is because they appeal to the people living here.

What advice do you have for anyone starting a business in Marbella?
Don’t listen to people that tell you it can’t be done and just do!! Anytime you’re afraid to try something new… just remember, amateurs built the ark, professionals built the Titanic; think about it.

What do you do to relax?
I love to cook for my beautiful girlfriend Louise Dahl.

What is your wish for 2011?
To live simply, love generously, care deeply and speak kindly in 2011 and always…

It’s a successful German weekly TV-series on VOX + RTL, about the life of 6 German women, living and working in Marbella. Entertaining and funny, it promotes life in  Marbella.

2. As a long-term resident of Marbella, what are the natural “pearls” of the resort we call home…?
The people, the beaches and the Mediterranean, the climate, and beautiful mountains.

3. If you had a magic wand and could grant Marbella a wish, what would it be?
I would wish Marbella a continuously sunny and warm winter climate.

4. What is the most “Marbella” experience you have lodged in your memory?
The glamorous Starlite Gala this summer in Villa Padierna, while Michelle Obama was staying there.

5. As a real estate empresaria, do your clients believe Marbella will return to its former glory?
My clients believe more in a “new” form of glory, Marbella could develop to.

6. How do you personally “sell” the Marbella lifestyle to potential buyers?
I guess, it’s easy, to “sell” the Marbella lifestyle. I take new potential buyers with me
on my tours to beach clubs, etc, a bit like “learning by doing”.

I remember Boris Becker saying at the Starlite Gala, that he knows and loves Marbella.

My future man, of course.

I can see by client’s enquiries directly from Germany, that Marbella’s image is getting better.

When did you first catch the fashion bug?
When I was around 11 years old and made my first dress by hand. I found some material and cut it out without a pattern. I really loved it.. it was a beautiful blue cotton plaid with a white daisy lace trim. I was so mesmerized by that material…and still remember the dress.

Where do you start when you fix up someone’s image?
I start with asking a lot of questions about their lifestyle in order to understand what activities they do and where they spend the most time. In this way I can understand what they will need clothing wise, make up wise, hair wise, etc. to make sure that the final product fits in with theirlifestyle and helps them look great in the least amount of time.

What is the secret ingredient of Euro Style as opposed to American style?
The secret is in the “aesthetic mindset” that European’s have ingrained in their DNA given their cultural heritage. Europeans are always looking for the beauty in things and not only functionality and this includes clothing. Euro chic appears effortless but a lot of effort and time goes into the European’s choice of clothing and grooming to achieve a laid back, stylish appearance.

American fashion is all about ease and is well known for its sportswear.  Many American designers are well known but have never made it to Haute Couture levels of design. Americans tend to appear as if they are trying too hard with too many trends in a look or by being too formal. What do our clothes reveal about us?
Clothes reveal our state of mind of the moment. They reveal our “inside” on the “outside”. When we aren’t feeling very confident we tend to dress down to fade into the background and when we are feeling fabulous we tend to dress up to get some attention. Also, clothing reveals our personality. For example, if we are romantic we lean towards florals, lace and pastel colours or if we are more forward thinking we tend to choose more contemporary, edgy, clean cut lines and techie materials and colours.

You spent many years in Italy… how does Italian style compare to Spanish?
I would say that Italian style is more fashion forward…Italian’s always want to be the first in following trends and in fact create their own trends within Italy. Everyone, at every age then jumps on the fashion bandwagon.

If you didn’t work in fashion, what would you like to do?
I’d love to be a television talk show host…I love doing my spot on Talk Radio Europe every Friday!

I’d say it depends where you are born. In Italy it’s nature, in the USA it’s nurture.

What advice do you have for looking stylish in Marbella?
Follow what’s trendy now but put your own spin on it…but by all means, tone it down a bit!

For six months every year you eat, sleep, breathe Nikki Beach Marbella. How do you do it?
When you like what you do, you don’t really feel the pressure and stress.

How did you land such an amazing job in the first place?
In 2003 while working in Miami as a restaurant manager at the Westin Hotel Resort and Spa in I was offered the opportunity to be part of the Nikki Beach opening team and the first opening was in Marbella

Oh and I forgot to mention, with the fast growth of Nikki Beach around the world you also get to spend the winters in exotic locations such as Turks and Caicos and Koh Samui – what brings you back to Marbella?
Marbella is like a second home for me, I have always returned here every year, since we first opened in 2003.

How do you explain the fact that despite the world economic turndown, Nikki Beach is still brimming with people coiffing vintage champagne, and even spraying champagne for fun….
I believe that what makes Nikki Beach stand apart is the exceptional service, quality food, exclusive entertainment and consistency  year after year.

If you had to describe yourself in one adjective, which would it be?
Straightforward.

Well, I wouldn’t say it was recession-proof but it’s not as bad as some.

You are a spiritual person – making people look good must create good karma. How does it come back to you?
I feel fulfilled in my work and I feel lucky with my surroundings, both at home and at work, like I have a huge personal bubble.

With 20 years of experience on the Coast what advice do you have for anyone setting up business?
You have to know your business and do a lot of research to get the best possible deals and also to make sure that your paperwork is correct for Spain. Some professions may have to register with the authorities otherwise even their licences from the UK may not be valid.

To what do you attribute your success?
If you look after your clients then the money will look after itself.

You told me once that here on the Coast everyone can live like a millionaire, with a swimming pool at home etc. In light of the recession, do you still believe this?
Yes, current rainy weather notwithstanding!

Why do you think that the dream of a life in the sun doesn’t work out for 70 percent of people who try to relocate to Spain?
They think it’s going to be easy and it isn’t.

What could you not live without?
My family.

Are you still mad on boxing?
Yes, I think I have one last fight left in me. I’ll probably have one more bout for charity – watch this space!

Why did you choose the medical profession?
I was interested in science since I was a kid, and medicine is a beautiful profession, which allows you to work and study scientifically, but also to be with human beings, to interact and to communicate with them about things that really matter to them.

Were you immediately attracted to practicing cosmetic surgery?
No, I did know within my first year of med school that I wanted to be a surgeon because I love the manual aspect of this specialty, but the attraction to plastic and cosmetic surgery came later during an exchange year in Paris – I was just impressed by the wide range of this field of specialty; you do reconstructive surgery and aesthetic surgery, you work on children and on older people, one day you work on a face,  another day on a hand or a leg – it is just never routine, and no working day is the same.

How do you feel when you see people’s lives change along with their appearance?

I feel very happy, because the impact of all the different kind of surgery I described above is already tremendous, but when it comes to giving somebody a new look, making them happier with themselves and less conscious of something they don’t like, it is really a very rewarding feeling.

Cosmetic surgery is a much-abused industry. How can clients ensure they are in safe and reputable hands?

First get the surgeon’s credentials, make sure that he is at least registered in his specialty with all the governing authorities (Colegio de medicos here in Spain, GMC in the UK). Second, ask openly about the surgeon’s experience, especially when it comes to more delicate and difficult procedures. Third, if you don’t feel comfortable and in safe hands: don’t go there! The relation between your surgeon and you is vital, and sometimes it is better to get a second or third opinion before deciding on who makes you feel the most comfortable.

Ageing is also a natural process – where do you draw the line in terms of the quest for eternal youth?

There is no eternal youth for us human beings, we all age, and this process is an important part of our life. But the truth is that we all age differently, some age very well, others not so good; so I see the role of a Plastic surgeon more within the boundaries of providing a possibility to those who did not have luck, genetics or lifestyle (a bit of all, to be true) to age well.

In our search for physical perfection, are we paying enough attention to our character?

Looks are not the only key to happiness. Character is built, not inherited (like my Dad used to say;-), and in my opinion this matter should be regarded separately from some people’s desire to look better – I would not even use the term perfection, because most of my patients are very realistic and reflect on what they want to achieve; and the improved looks they want to achieve are definitely not their only key to happiness.

Why did you choose to come to Marbella to set up Ocean Clinic?

I am in love with Spain, its people and especially with Marbella being such a special place.It is a great luck that the place I like so much provides at the same time perfect conditions for the profession I love.

What does Marbella give you back?

The feeling of being at home, even if I wasn’t born here.

If you could give Marbella a metaphorical “nip and tuck” what would you do to improve her?
The second line of the Puerto Banus needs an urgent Face Lift – from bone to skin

Radio station boss, presenter, entrepreneur, charity supporter extraordinaire, family man…Who is the real Maurice Boland?
I don’t even know if I have the answer to that… Above all, I would say the real Maurice Boland is a man who has compassion for those less fortunate than himself and a man who’s hugely proud of his family and passionate about his work.

You have had your own radio station six years now – what have been the best and worst moments?
The best and proudest moment without doubt is when I launched the radio and pushed that button at 8pm on 10th May 2004 and said ‘Good morning and welcome’. The worst is when my evening presenter Craig James and a friend of mine for over 15 years told me he had terminal cancer.

After your love affair with TV, has the radio totally seduced you now?
Well, if I could make a choice, I’d choose both; I love both the mediums for different reasons radio for fantasy and TV for expression…

You have interviewed just about every celebrity alive – who is still left on your hit list?
There are so many… let me see: . Jeremy Paxman, Jeremy Clackson, Simon Cowell, David Letterman, King Juan Carlos of Spain etc, etc…

What does the boss of a radio station do all day?
You mean ALL day and ALL night – a radio station never closes 24 hrs per day – we are like the Windmill Theatre. My day begins at 6am when I have breakfast and head off to the studios. My first job of the day is to make sure everything is working, checking emails and seeing what my diary has for me for the rest of the day.

My own program starts at 11am. I normally have between 4 and 6 guests of variable backgrounds from politicians to famous celebrities and a lot of reading and research has to be done before broadcast.

My show finishes at 1pm and running the radio station begins almost immediately after I come off air. Meetings are set for me whether it be a new client to talk about advertising or staff and production schedules to be sorted out. I usually lunch with a client, then it’s back to the studio or out to see clients.

Most days involve charity work too. I’m Honorary patron of CUDECA, the cancer care hospice and I contribute to many other charities. I’m normally ready to leave the office before 7pm, which gives me enough time to get home and change if I need to attend a charity gala as a host. My ideal evening is to be home with my wife – and family if they pop around, but that is a rarity rather than the norm. I like to be in bed as close to midnight as possible.

Do you ever just wish you could sit around the house with your feet up?
No, never!

What can we learn about “expat life” by listening to Talk Radio Europe..?
Talk Radio Europe is dedicated to the expat communities along the Costa Del Sol and Costa Blanca and we tap into the issues that most concern people living abroad. News,both local, national and international is paramount and is top of our list of importance, we carry news from the British Embassy, Town Halls the Spanish tourist board and the Junta de Andalucia. We have contracts with the BBC and SKY news.

As a talk formatted radio station, debate is an important part of our programming and listeners are invited to contribute to most programmes by telephone. Financial news and updates on markets and currencies are also broadcast throughout out the day. Medical, legal and health and fitness’ news and updates are also included in our programme schedules.

You have been in Marbella since the 80s – would you ever go back to Ireland to live?
I would never say ‘never’!

Do you have a hero?
No!

What would be the best thing that could happen to Marbella?
The recovery of our economy, the Town Hall getting it right, our image abroad improving and restaurant, supermarket, hotels, beaches and banks improving their service – a smile never hurts!! And the sun continues to shine.

He’s done Dubai, lived Los Angeles and now he’s mooched around Marbella all
in the name of research for his own series of savvy TV documentaries.

Like a new, better-looking Alan Whicker for the "Oneders" or
the Twenty Tens,  the utterly charming and articlulate Piers
Morgan has chosen to put Marbella in the spotlight in the latest of his
travel programmes. 

Defies Definition 
In the hour long programme,  the smooth, besuited media giant, Piers Morgan 
admitted that Marbella, unlike other resorts such as Barbados or parts of Thailand,  is
difficult to define.He expected a rough tough Marbella full of glamour models,
footballers and gangsters – and was surprised to find that, while there
are elements of that clichéd old, Costa del Crime vision of Marbella,there
is another "quite extraordinary side to Marbella – one of staggering wealth
and discretion."

Mr Morgan’s  whirlwind tour of Marbella took in all the glamour and glitz
of the resort, with bird’s eye helicopter footage, a trip to the exlusive
Ascari race course and lots of zipping around the Golden Mile in sexy little
sports cars.  Well-researchedand balanced, Piers Morgan’s Marbella was
desirable and dripping with glamour, and while he did poke fun at the town built
on under the table Bin Laden’s,  the documentary focused on the positive reasons  why
some 300,000 Britons live in the area, and another 2.5 million visited the
Costa del Sol last year. 

In the documentary, Piers takes a glimpse at the disparate tastes and ambience
which make up the cosmopolitan cocktail that is Marbella…  From Gary
Lineker’s  bar in Puerto Banús, popular with beer-swilling, young
English holiday makers out for a good time, to the rarified world of the super
wealthy in La Zagaleta private estate.

Morgan looks in on a champagne spraying party at world famous, luxury beach
club Nikki Beach, where he interviews Gazza’s daughter, Bianca Gasgoine.  He
later trawls the designer stores of Puerto Banus with Karren Brady,
former boss of Birmingham City football club, who succinctly says of
the resort, " There are two sides to this place – part euro, and  part
trash – but both sides are quite fun."

In The Super League
But it seems to be the houses, not the people who inhabit them that most captivated
Piers Morgan’s imagination.  He gained access to the home of a British
Knight of the realm – who remains nameless – a mind-bogglingly luxurious
property valued in excess of 60 million pounds which the owner inhabits for
just 3 weeks of the year.  

On his travels, Morgan caught up with Marbella stalwarts PR Guru Max Clifford,
empresario supremo, Alan Sugar, and Princess Diana’s former love interest,
turned club owner, James Hewitt,  all of whom have homes in Marbella. 

"Butlins for billionaires," is Piers Morgan’s epithet for the resort
that has been home to European and Saudi Royalty for more than five decades
– but underneath the jibing, Piers Morgan seemed genuinely impressed. Let’s
see if Mr Morgan and his delightful  girlfriend Celia are spotted here
next summer sipping champagne on some billionaire’s yacht.  Come on Piers,
surprise us…Marbella has a magnetic effect…

Today, Dani García, who is already in possession of a much coveted Michelin star, found himself bestowed with yet another, slightly different, kind of star. Appearing delighted to shine amongst other guiding lights on the Boulevard such as Julio Iglesias and Antonio Banderas, García took a moment to take in the applause as his very own star was revealed.

The young chef has been creating a stir for many years with his skilful gastronomic creations served within his hugely popular restaurant, Calima, which is revered throughout Spain.
