How did you get into fashion Julia?
My mother was a textile designer, so I grew up with an awareness of fabrics, colours, patterns and the allure of clothing…

What was the inspiration for Fashionvilla Marbella?
We are German, but we had a family home here in Marbella, and we had the idea to create a unique multi-brand experience for women living in and visiting Marbella. We wanted to offer women beautiful clothes that were not from the high street, or high fashion either – a happy half-way, and items you can’t find in other stores!  That was 7 years ago!

What makes fashion in Marbella different?
Because of the amazing climate, and the sunlight, people in Marbella tend to wear brighter colours – and the style is generally dress up, rather than dress down.  At cocktails and launches in northern Europe, jeans and boots are seen, but here it’s cocktail dresses.  Galas however, in Germany, are much more formal than here!

Can you describe an average day in your Fashionvilla world?
My days – and timetables vary enormously – which is great, no boring routines for me!
Sometimes I am up at 6am doing paperwork and planning outfits for my shows, searching the web for new brands and accessories. Then I have fittings with models, attend to clients during our normal opening hours, and then more often or not I have social engagements in the evenings – our own Fashionvilla events, charity dos, dinners, etcetera – nights at home are rare for me!

What is your personal fashion weakness?
I just love jackets – I have to keep buying them – blazers, military style, classic, edgy:
A good jacket can totally make an outfit!

What do you just love about Fashionvilla?
It is simply wonderful to help other women fulfill their dreams – you can see their confidence grow when they find the right outfit- change your style, change your life – it is so true!  Also, many of my lovely clients have become special friends – which is fabulous!

What does fashion contribute to our lives?
Look good – feel good!  Fashion gives women confidence and an outfit can totally change a woman’s body image.  A simple accessory can transform an old dress or suit into something really fashionable.  Fashion is a kind of magic wand to transform people, moods and add fun and colour to life!

What are your top 3 recommended fashion buys this season?
I would have to say animal print, outdoor jackets and blazers… there I go with the jackets again!  And slim fit trousers in black or camel… eternally elegant.  Oh!  And let’s not forget fur!  A fur hat, gloves, scarf or bag – that is a must this winter!

What is your ultimate fashion fantasy?
I am a big fan of Georgio Armani, so I would love to be involved in an Armani fashion show  – that would be a dream!

Boland Is Back! Maurice Boland returns to the airwaves with new Costa del Sol radio station iTalk.fm Following a year of soul-searching, larger-than-life radio host, Maurice Boland is back on the airwaves with the launch of his new station italk.fm.  Louise Cook Edwards talks to the Coast’s beloved and berated Irish media star about his return to the public domain.

Love him or loathe him, Maurice Boland is the self-confessed “Marmite” of the Costa del Sol’s media..  12 months on from his shock departure from TRE, the station he founded a decade ago , following an alleged indiscretion with  a teenage girl, Boland has bounced back with a smart new radio station located in a suite of offices within the 5-star Kempinski Hotel Estepona.   Already notching up impressive interviews with key celebrities such as Stephen Fry and Sinead O’Connor, is it onwards and upwards for the man who loves nothing more than talking on the radio?

LCE. How does it feel to be back in action on the radio with a brand new station?
M.B. As I said at our opening cocktail reception I could never believe a year down the line that I would be standing here with such a big turn out launching my new radio station iTalk FM its simply unbelievable.

LCE. You have been through a tough time emotionally – what did you learn in the past year?
MB. I learnt who were my friends and who were my enemies – simple as that.

LCE. You are a very religious man  - do you think we suffer for our mistakes in this life, or when we meet our maker?
MB. It’s up to us to face up to our mistakes in life and do the best not to make them again.

LCE. If you could go back in time, would you change anything?
MB. One or two things…

LCE. Starting afresh feels good – why have you gone back down the same road – ie launching another radio station?
MB. Radio/TV entertainment is all I know and I hope I’m good at it. Radio is a great passion of mine – not just the performance but the writing and designing programmes. Creativity plays a great part in my business and I always enjoy launching new ideas for shows, and allowing and watching novice presenters developing. I have seen a few of my protégés develop into talented radio presenters. Currently Pippa Jones, who started with me only a few weeks ago and had never sat behind a microphone, is showing favourable signs of becoming one of our leading broadcasters.

LCE. What will make iTalk.fm different and a success?
MB. It’s down to three important points Experience; Leadership and The Professionalism of  iTalk.fm’s presenters. For some reason it seems that everyone thinks they can become a radio boss or broadcaster after 5 minutes in the business and it shows as we all know only too well. So yes I hope the combined years in the business of my team will help guide iTalk FM to the success I know it should be. The coast’s media has lost a lot of its audience to the recession.

LCE. Do you think those boom days with half a million Brits living here are ever coming back?
MB. No I don’t believe they will…but business will recover in a good way in time but not as we long-time residents remember.

LCE. 2012 is around the corner – what challenges do you think the Costa del Sol will have to face next year?
MB. Financial survival!
LCE. If you were Mayor of Marbella what would you do  to attract investment and new foreign residents?
MB. Tax free incentives. The name Marbella conjures up success overseas and I would capitalize on that by encouraging big companies to host more seminars here etc. I spoke with the Town Hall in that past about trying to host some kind of UK TV awards here as many of the soap stars love coming to Marbella.

LCE. And with the new government in Spain – how quickly do you anticipate seeing a change for the better?
MB. Today I interviewed an Irish expert on Ireland’s economy (also in crisis) He predicts a recovery in 12 years! I hope he’s wrong but certainly it won’t be overnight.

LCE. What is your personal wish for 2012?
MB. I have many! Obviously the good health and happiness of my family, the success of iTalk.fm and some light at the end of the tunnel for the recovery of the European economy.

A Time for Reinvention! Inspiration & Reinvention Networking Groups Launch in Marbella Spain

Following the global energy shift of 11.11.11. signifying a time of interconnectedness, the buzzword of the moment seems to be Reinvention as the world looks to solutions to age old problems, and we human beings seek greater meaning and fulfillment in our everyday lives.  The good news is that a powerful group of highly professional and motivated individuals from London will be bringing a raft of reinvention skills to the Costa del Sol with the Inspiration & Reinvention Group project – launching in Spain in Thursday 17th November with a weekend of inspirational workshops from leaders in their fields.  marbellas.com reports.
On Thursday 17th November Spain will be the first mainland European country to have an Inspiration and Reinvention Group. Inspiration and Reinvention Groups are part of a UK / European Transformational Movement started by Debbie Arnold and Caroline Sheridan, now joined by many leading Inspirators, Motivators, Coaches, Healers and Teachers.

Debbie & Caroline decided that the first launch outside of the UK would be in Marbella as they felt that Spain and Andalucia in particular has an amazing energy.  The meaning of Andalucia ‘walking in light’ also resonated with them as their mission is to enlighten and empower individuals to find their purpose and passion and to fulfill their potential as human beings.  They also importantly believe that this new Movement is not just about ‘Personal’ development but that in 2012 we are now moving into an era of ‘us’ development. They and their Partners and Associates are all working towards building communities of people who collaborate and cooperate, who inspire and are inspired by others.  Inspiration and Reinvention Groups will be launched in 50 cities / locations during 2012.

Debbie & Caroline pre-promoted the launch of Inspiration and Reinvention Groups in October 2011 with Talks to networking groups including Women in Business Spain and  they were interviewed about their plans on Talk Europe Radio.  During their visit they appointed local business woman Susan Hunter as their International Representative and Jo King as their IRG Partner in Marbella.  Jo King is an Inspirational Speaker and award winning Motivational Teacher who has created her own form of body confidence therapy and she will be running regular IRG meetings and workshops in Marbella during 2012.

The Open House was a chance for members of the Press Club to invite guests who also work in the media across a whole range of activities, from the largest publications and broadcasters on the Coast to the smallest freelance agencies.  Also in attendance were councillors responsible for foreign residents and the press from Marbella and Fuengirola Town Halls.

The strong turnout and enthusiasm of the people attending showed just how vibrant the foreign resident media community is, and reminded everyone of the important role journalists and other professional communicators play in integrating the different nationalities on the Costa del Sol and keeping residents and visitors informed about life here.

Introducing the event, The President of the Costa Press Club, Jesper Sander Pedersen, explained to guests that the Costa Press Club is celebrating 10 successful years next year acting as a representative of the foreign media in southern Spain and that he was looking forward to welcoming several new members as a result of the ‘Open House’. Speaking afterwards, Jesper said “The response to the event shows how strong the journalistic community is here and highlights the huge role we media people play in supporting the international and national residents. Jamie Cullum wows the Coast! Fuengirola Castle was the perfect , eclectic venue for one of  the UK’s quirkiest celebrity musicians -  Twenty something jazz performer Jamie Cullum, now 31, who stole the hearts of the appreciative Costa crowd with his versatile voice and cheekily charismatic performance. In a rare slice of privileged musical history on the Costa del Sol, Jamie Cullum played for two hours to a spellbound audience at the evocative Sohail Castle in Fuengirola. From the moment the pocket sized powerhouse stepped onto the set, Cullum quickly engaged the audience with the pure energy of his seamless piano playing – his dextrous fingers seemingly welded to the instrument- and his propensity to jump up from the piano, leap across the stage, crooning as only he knows how -   and then run back and plonk the ivories with a Converse-shod foot!

So sure fingered – and footed – was Cullum, the pint-size star simply didn’t miss a note as his improvised play list took the audience on a magical jazz journey that spanned all musical genres from romantic ballady covers, such as  What a Difference A Day Makes, haunting love songs, including Love Is a Losing Game to reggae and African beats and  his own quirkily catchy classics including Photograph, These are the Days, amd Twentysomething. Like a restless kid, Cullum stomped all over the stage, ripped off clothing, danced on top of the piano, before plunging from its height in a rock-star style stunt.

A brilliant recording artist  – one that is almost way too successful for his 31 years, with four albums under his belt -  seeing Cullum bouncing all over the Castle in a vibrant live performance was the ultimate affirmation of his acutely polished, yet totally spontaneous talent.   Cullum connected well with the public from word go, talking in Spanish, telling funny anecdotes and actually walking down from the stage to sing his soulful version of Cry Me a River right into the ears of the the adoring fans positioned keenly in the front row.

Totally taken with the venue, Cullum joked that the people in the ramparts might launch an attack of bows and arrows  down below… and the effortlessly natural and affable star seemed genuinely delighted to be performing in such a special, history-imbibed venue on a gloriously starry-skied summer night.  Joined on stage by a clutch of class musicians on drums, keyboard, bass and sax, Jamie was in very good company, and he played from the heart for a time-stopping two hours  – although his tireless talent, boundless puppy dog energy and endless repetoire could have carried him along all night. Before leaving he pledged his love to the audience.  The feeling is mutual Jamie, we want you back soon!

The concert will showcase Jamie’s eclectic jazz music, and the audience will be treated to highlights of the star’s new album, The Pursuit along with enduring classics that have defined his career, and more than a few surprises. Jamie Cullum is set to release his eagerly awaited fifth album entitled “The Pursuit”…

This, his first solo album in four years, is a combination of his eclectic music tastes and enduring love of Jazz and its timeless standards . “In life, we pursue everything. Life is one long pursuit,” says Jamie. “The Pursuit” will be released on Decca/Terrified Records on 3 formats; the first a standard CD, the second a special edition CD with added DVD containing 8 – 10 live tracks, 2 videos, bonus tracks, the directors commentary plus extended booklet and finally, a Ltd Edition Deluxe box set, which includes CD/DVD, a 100 page personal photo book of Jamie’s photos, a signed print, a key of a piano & badge. This edition will only be available through Jamie’s website, www.jamiecullum.com “The Pursuit” is a record that mixes his heritage with a thrilling selection of modern influences.

Describing its sound he moves from Cole Porter to Rhianna to Aphex Twin in the same sentence. Jamie is a performer capable of delivering constant surprises with a talent elastic enough to evince a four-to-the-floor acoustic Ibiza song on the same record as a lushly recorded Jazz standard. The making of the album was a marathon not a sprint. Having decided to take time off after two years touring 2005′s ‘Catching Tales‘ and the juggernaut of praise and press that followed the previous album 2003′s ‘Twentysomething’, Jamie turned to other projects. “I took a whole year off,” he says, “I played in other people’s bands and worked with other artists, I Dj’d, made dance music with my brother and travelled.” He also found time to build his own studio, Terrified Studios, in London’s Shepherd’s Bush. All the songs on ‘The Pursuit’ began life at Terrified Studios and in Jamie’s kitchen before recording moved to Los Angeles for three months over the summer of 2008.

While work there with producer and long-time associate Greg Wells proved productive, some of the work from Jamie’s kitchen made it to the final product. “We realised there were some things we couldn’t recreate in any studio,” Jamie reveals. By the autumn of 2008, Jamie had a finished album and was ready to present it to his record company when the utter oddness of his career intervened. Clint Eastwood came calling again. The pair had connected through Clint’s son Kyle, a fellow Jazz musician and Jamie ended up contributing to the Clint composed soundtrack to John Cusack’s 2007 film Grace Is Gone. Now he was back with another assignment. Clinting the Deal “He asked me to play at the Monterey Jazz Festival. He loved the performance and after the gig, he threw the script of Gran Torino at me and said, ‘I want you to write music for this’.” Gran Torino (the song) with music by Clint Eastwood and Jamie and lyrics by Jamie alone, was nominated for a Golden Globe. Jamie found himself involved in a whirlwind of interviews and press appearances to promote the film.

All the time, he was collecting ideas and inspiration for new songs. It seemed like the record might not be finished after all. “I had more songs and new experiences to draw upon,” says Jamie, “I’d been doing the Rhianna cover and thought, actually I really want this on my album.” Covers have always been part of Jamie’s DNA as a Jazz musician , and after previously covering Rhianna’s all conquering uber-single “Umbrella”, it’s ubiquity led Jamie to choose another of the r’n'b poppet’s tunes – “Please Don’t Stop The Music”.

Ten years on from his first self-funded release, Heard It All Before, Jamie is still (here’s that theme again) pursuing new sounds and new ideas in his music. “We’ve had a lot of musicians who’ve arrived fully formed recently like Alex Turner or Jamie T. They knew what they wanted to sound like and said it straight away. When I made my first record it was a stab in the dark, something to sell at my wedding gigs.” Though he says he lived his “twenties to the fullest”, in recent years the up-and-downs of his personal and professional life have fuelled an even more powerful creative drive. His personal happiness (exhaustively and often inaccurately documented by the tabloids) is at the heart of one of the album’s most important songs – ‘Love Ain’t Gonna Let You Down’. “I’ve never written a love song that didn’t have a joke in it before,” Jamie admits, “The only pure love songs I’d sung before that were by George Gershwin.” ‘Love Ain’t Gonna Let You Down’ is also the song that ties up the album’s over-arching theme in the lyric “the pursuit of love consumes us all”. But for Jamie, the love he documents is not just the romantic one that obsesses the red tops but a love of music that shines out from every track.

The Pursuit is an album that starts with a track featuring the Count Basie Orchestra recorded live at Tony Bennett’s studio in New York and ends with a dance track and a jazz standard combined with trip-hop beats. “The only thing I have to live up to is making an album that I’m proud of.” On the strength of this astounding record, that’s yet another pursuit he’s succeeded in.

Hot on the tails of the FIAM Art festival in Marbella, the Georgian Chamber of Commerce in Marbella celebrated their involvement in the festival with a relaxed summer party at Golden Goose restaurant on Marbella’s Golden Mile. Celebrating their involvement in the growing FIAM festival for the 2nd year, this year, the Georgian community of Marbella presented a little taster of everything they are famous for – with Georgian artists and performers, food and wines, all enjoyed by the EuroGeorgia cultureal centre, FIAM organizers, friends, business partners and artists from Georgia.

At the party were Georgians visiting the Coast from Russia, London, Malaga and Madrid – with representatives of the “Iberia Georgian Cultural Centre’’ and Georgian Chamber of Commerce representatives from both the capital and the north of Spain.

After the vigours of the Festival, the Georgian Summer Festival Party proved to be the perfect scenario in which everyone involved in the FIAM could relax, chill out, dine on fine Georgian cuisine – prepared by the Head Chef of the President’s Administration of Georgia, who was visiting Marbella currently to discover Andalusian cuisine – and dance to the sounds of rising Georgian Star, IA whose album Sweet 16 has just been released, and Salome Simone, a Georgian Girl resident in Marbella,  who last year reached the semifinals of national talent show, Operación Triunfo.

A year ago, the Georgian Cultural Centre EuroGeorgia  organized the “twinning of Marbella and Batumi” one of the most beautiful resorts on the Black Sea coastline.
