Eighty of the World´s elite venues united for an event which was claimed to redefine the Word “Party”. Marbellas.com was invited to the Marbella party at the Suite del Mar at the Puente Romano Hotel.

On Friday 16 September, Suite del Mar in the luxurious Hotel Puente Romano hosted the Global Party. Many of the Marbella Glitterati and familiar faces from the Marbella press attended the event at Suite. Regular party goers were impressed by the amount of money spent on entertainment, ice sculptures (which melted away in heat of the evening fairly rapidly) and on the spectacular marque and lighting erected for the one night extravaganza.

Clearly raising money for 80 different charities around the World from a series of parties is a good idea – the charities benefit and so do the benefactors as they have a luxurious night out. The amounts paid to the organisers and the amounts donated would make interesting reading as no expense seems to be spared on the one night function. A full list of the charities is not displayed on the Global Party website, however those mentioned include; The Blue Marine Foundation, Raisa Gorbachev Foundation, The Pratham Education Foundation, Prince Harry’s Sentebale Charity, Tusk Trust (of which Prince William is the patron) and the Nelson Mandela Children’s Fund UK.

In an effort to unite leading luxury brands and intensify awareness for charities around the globe the event was inspired by fictional character Phileas Fogg, created by Jules Verne his book ‘Around the World in 80 Days’. Apparently toted as the hottest ticket this year, the question heard around town was “have you received your invite yet?”

Never shy to throw a good party, Suite del Mar did pull out all the stops for the Global Party. From acrobats and violinists (the famous Julio) to flame throwers and ice sculptures to internationally acclaimed DJs and performers, the party brought the summer season to a close with a grand impact. Guests were particularly excited for the performance of recording artist and Queen of UK clubs, Hannah. With number one hits on the club and dance charts in Ibiza and the UK and remixes by top DJs such as Robbie Riviera and Armin Van Buuren, Hannah elevated the party atmosphere.

Invitations to the Global Party enabled guests to select from any of the 80 parties taking place around the world. They could sip Champagne in Marbella, Vodka Martinis in London, Manhattans in New York or Margaritas in Mexico, and with celebrity supporters comprising the likes of Damien Hirst, Elizabeth Hurley, Simon Cowell, Jemima Khan and Boris Johnson; you never knew who you would have run into any of the chosen destinations. Along with the invitation, each invitee received a limited edition, purchasable Global Party Key-2 Luxury silver key ring, which allowed them access to privileges around the world and entry into a parallel universe of luxury.

The directors behind this ambitious venture are the renowned hedge fund veteran Lord Stanley Fink and luxury lifestyle expert David Johnstone, whose joint expertise have inspired the leading global players to commit to such an extraordinary concept. This ambitious event is creating a global media stir. Mikimoto, The Orient Express and Harry Winston confirmed as ‘Gold Sponsors’ and the Global Party brought together many luxury brands to create a truly global event.

The Dirty Robbers musical identity derives from the most authentic groups of the early 60’s British Roots music scene. The band is influenced by emblematic artists such as Freddy King, Johnny Guitar Watson, The Sonics, The Beatles, The Stones, Fleetwood Mac and The Knickerbockers.

In the last 3 years The Robbers have performed in clubs and festivals in the UK and Europe but this will be the first time they have ever performed in Spain – another debut!

The Margoes (Barcelona – Pictured at top of feature)

Fast-forwarding to today, Curran has just released his fifth album ‘Reform School Girl’ with his current band the Lowlifes – a jewel of the wildest Rhythm & Blues and most unique Black Rock and Roll. The band will present the album in the festival at the one and only concert they are playing in Andalusía.

Photography Gary Edwards

After the controversy of the cancelled Faithless concert a few weeks ago by it’s promotors Kings of Production, tongues were wagging as to whether the Rockin’ Marbella music promotors would be able to come up with the goods. In fact, those doubters need not have worried as all permits were in place at the Banus Bullring and the artists were evidently paid to perform. But perhaps the Faithless incident had an ill effect on ticket sales of the X Factor event? Unlike the recent sell-out Seal Concert in the Marbella Bullring, and Bjorn Again with about 3,000 people in the audience, the X Factor didn’t attract as expected. Maybe price too was a reason for the less than half filled venue. VIP tickets were priced at 400€ which gave permission to pass into a cordoned off, meter high raised area where Champagne and canapes were served through out the concert. The least expensive entrance was 50€, and 100€ to be in the centre or to get to the front of stage. With no subsidy for children, the ones who fill the front row at X Factor concerts, a family of five would have been shelling out 500€.

Diversity

The Dance group Diversity were the first of the headlines to perform. The group shot to fame on the 2009 Britain’s Got Talent TV series, winning the competition, beating Susan Boyle who was 2nd in the final. Ashley Banjo, lead choreographer, heads the group of dancers whose ages range from 15 to 28. Many of the children in the Banus audience listed Diversity as their favourite of the performers, but were surprised to see that 15 minutes was the total of their performance on stage. Some missed the performance completely as late arrivals were plentiful.

The Scarletz

Billed as being the ‘Hottest new Girl Band’ with intentions of filling the charts with their Ska inspired music, Bryony, Claire, Katiya and Tahnee are as sweet as sugar. Their music inspired by Madness and the Specials, is probably not Suggs’s cup of tea and he may find the sound and vision a little hard to swallow. With a repertoire of about 5 songs, at one point on being asked by a band member, “What are we singing next?”, one of the girls replied “I don’t know!”. Unfortunately, the young girls, pretty and fun as they are, were not greeted with much enthusiasm by the audience who rather unnecessarily booed them after their performance and again at the end of the gig when the announcer asked for a cheer for Scarletz rather than a boo.

Alexandra Burke

With only her 22nd birthday a few days away, Alexandra Burke has certainly achieved a great deal in her short career. Winning the fifth series of The X Factor, she soon became a World record holder selling the most singles in a 24 hour period, a staggering 105,000 copies of her single Hallelujah which went on to be the 2008 number one. Alexandra gave a confident performance in Banus, her training with The X Factor showing what true professionals are capable of producing. Songs included the single Hallelujah, Bad Boys and a Michael Jackson tribute.

Jamie Archer

It would be true to say that chap from Putney, London was the saviour of the evening in terms wowing the crowd. Singing Sex on Fire from Kings of Leon, his favourite rock song and countless other covers, Jamie lifted the audience out of their seats like none of his predecessors that evening had done. It has been said on one website that Jamie saw Jimi Hendrix in concert as a child, although as Jamie was born six years after the guitar hero died, that is a little hard to believe. Still, sporting a similar Afro hair style, he played several tracks with his guitar. Another rumour that Jamie is Leo Sayer’s son is not at all true. Jamie’s father, William Archer, is from Guyana in South America. Jamie reached 7th place in the 2009 X Factor series with his mentor Simon Cowell. Joe McEldery from South Shields was the winner that year, but it seems that Jamie is making as much of an impact on the music scene, if not more than his counterpart. His performance and his enthusiasm was full of energy. Happy to be in Marbella Jamie said that the Banus Bullring was the best Venue he had ever played at.

We’re spoilt for choice when it comes to beach bars and clubs on the Costa del Sol. But with so many, it’s often difficult to decide where to go so we’ve scoured the coast to find you the classiest, funkiest, most fabulous places to eat, drink and chill out by the Mediterranean sea.

If you’re more about the music than the glitzy, lavish Marbella lifestyle, you’ll feel right at home at Sonora. With its bohemian ambience and regular live music events, it’s not suprising that the bar attracts a large number of the coast’s reggae lovers, rock rebels and funk fans.

With a name like ‘Heaven’ this beach club has a lot to live up to. But luckily, we agree – the place is pretty special. From a distance, it may look like your average chiringuito but inside, it couldn’t be more different. Its tropical island feel makes it the perfect place to spend the whole day indulging your senses.

During the summer months, there’s no better place to take the family for a day of beach fun and frolics. Bonsai Museum / Museo del Bonsai

You don’t have to drive up into the mountains to get a glimpse of Marbella’s stunning natural surroundings; situated close to the centre of town, the Bonsai Museum is home to a collection of over 300 minature trees and over 40 different species, all carefully extracted from the nearby countryside and cared for by devoted owner, Miguel Angel García.

Believed to house one of the best Bonsai collections in Europe, the museum features a number of beautifully arranged miniature displays, each designed to replicate areas of woodland close to Marbella.

Many of these ‘mini-forests’ display bonsais which are dangerously close to extinction (such as the ‘Pinsapo Pine’) as well as naturally sculptered rocks and even water. The rocks were taken from a 17 square km nature reserve, situated close to the inland town of Antequera.

The reserve, known as the ‘Torcal’, offers some of the most breathtaking views in Europe, thanks to its abundance of limestone which over thousands of years have formed some amazing shapes.

The museum boasts other impressive specimens such as the ‘Acebuche Olive’ – a 300 year old tree and the Chinese ‘Almez’ – a tree which has belonged to the same Chinese family for 5 generations.

Wild olive trees also feature heavily in the displays and the small yet charming collection is among the best in the world.

Address: Parque Arroyo de la Represa Avda. Del Dr. Maíz Viñal, Marbella.

Tel: 952 862 926

Opening Hours: Monday –Sunday from 10.00h to 13.30h then 16.00h to 19.00h.

Admission: Adults – 3.00€, Children – 1.50€

The Museum of Contemporary Spanish Engravings / Museo del Grabado Español Contemporáneo

Marbella’s ‘Casco Antiguo’ (or ‘The Old Town’, as it’s known to most Brits), is something of a treasure trove – not only is it home to numerous quirky shops, boutiques, small chapels and little gems of restaurants and bars, but it also caters well for lovers of contemporary art.

Although situated close to some of Marbella’s busiest tourist attractions, few people know that the Museo de Grabado Español Contemporáneo exists. But true culture-vultures or those fortunate enough to stumble across it whilst exploring the narrow, picturesque streets of the Old Town, will discover a number of rare works by artistic greats such as Pablo Ruiz Picasso, Joan Miró, Goya Eduardo Chillada and SalvadorDalí.

This medieval tower was a hospital back in the 16th Century but now houses an array of decorative printmaking techniques dating from to the 15th Century to the present day.

It was opened in1992 by the late Professor José Luis Morales y Marin – an avid collector of contemporary prints.

Once you’ve marvelled at impressive etchings from yesteryear and gazed at the more modern masterpieces on display, you can take a slice of the gallery home with you by treating yourself to fine art and prints from the museum’s very own shop.

Address: Hospital Bazán s / n. 29 601. Marbella

Tel: 952 765 741

Opening Hours: Tuesday-Friday: 9.00-21.00 h.

Monday and Friday: 9.00-14.00 h.
