SuperEvolver (pictured above with Matt Black owner, Anthony Partridge) played a live set and guests proved that Marbella isn’t all Champagne, cavier and cosy cocktail parties. Vodka, Red Bull and beer was the booze which flowed well into the early hours celebrating the opening of a dream realised by Anthony Partridge the Harley Davidson fanatic behind Matt Black. Together with SuperEvolver as entertainment, a Rock style version of Cirque de Soleil group dangled from ribbons and scaled the walls in leather and rubber. Fire breathers and mind blowing dancers also performed between the rock ‘n’ roll anthems and original music from SuperEvolver to about 400 guests, some of whom came over from countries around Europe and also from the USA.

Did the future of the car arrive in Marbella last week? Well, quite possibly. marbellas.com was invited to test drive an electric powered sports car with alleged performance to leave the traffic lights putting any Ferrari in its rear view mirror… This had to be seen, but as we found out wouldn’t be heard. Welcome to the Tesla Roadster from Silicon Valley, California.

As we left the car park of the Rocamar Hotel in Mijas, the only sound was the crunching of tyres on gravel. No roar or vvvrooom. The stealth red sports car silently pulled away onto the twisty country lane down towards the coast. With the roof off all that could be heard was the birds, crickets and the campo dogs.  Immediately noticeable was the firmness of the steering and solidness of the vehicle. The Tesla Roadster comes in two versions, Roadster and Roadster Sport which gives a little more power and a varying suspension options as well as various other sporty extras. But basically the car is a unique feat of engineering, an electric sports car with two foot pedals as in an automatic and only one forward gear. Go stop, go stop. And as the windy road opened out on to the main carretera it was clear the little car really did know how to go.

The power of a mobile
In Europe the cars are assembled by Lotus in fact are about 8% Lotus parts – Many will see the resemblance to the Elise. The AC induction motor and gear box create instant torque from 0 rpm. Up to 295 lbs-ft of torque and 288 horsepower are produced as the car smoothly accelerates from 0-100km in 3.7 seconds. The Tesla Roadster is powered by a battery comprising 6831 lithium-ion mobile phone style batteries which amount to 450 of the cars total weight of 1,234 kilos. Imagine a cross between a golf buggy, a go-kart and a top of the range Ferrari and the Tesla is somewhere there. As the foot pressed down, with no fuss, no noise, no changing gear the car glided forward as if hovering over the tarmac like some kind of silent jet, but as the first mini roundabout was negotiated it demonstrated how in touch with the road it really was – as if on rails in fact. The electric powertrain enables unprecedented responsiveness as Roadster becomes an extension of the driver and reacts in an instant. With custom-tuned suspension the driver is allowed to adjust the handling to their preference. Hand-built from carbon fibre, the Roadster sets the mark for premium electric cars to come with its monocoque chassis, constructed of resin-bonded and riveted extruded aluminum adds rigidity and strength to the lightweight package.

Living with the Tesla
With no engine noise from the air-cooled electric motor, the journey from the Rocamar Hotel to Marbella and back was smooth, fast and effortless emphasizing the ability to use this car on a daily basis. Sound reduction materials quiet the cabin and wheel arch liners suppress road noise adding to the ‘glide effect’. So what are the draw backs? As with any small two seater, a Lotus, Ferrari or Morgan, space is limited which is expected. Some space is taken up by the easily removed and replaced fold-away roof (a hard top option is available), but realistically a sports holdall is about the limit. And if the plan is to drive far, which is not really what the car was designed for, that overnight bag will be needed. The zero-emissions car only allows a 350km driving range under normal driving conditions. Other notorious motoring journalists have revealed the present lithium batteries are far from efficient if using the power of the car to its limits for any length of time.
There are three options to recharge, firstly with the universal mobile which charges from empty to full in 6 hours, secondly with the high power wall connector which will achieve the same in 4 hours and lastly with a spare mobile connector which will take 30 hours but is really used for top ups after a short trip. It plugs into nearly any outlet, anywhere in the world. Saving on fuel and going green does have its cost though – there won’t be much change from 100,000 euros if you decide to buy one of these limited edition cars. There are only 2,500 units of this particular model, of which 1,600 have been sold in Europe and the US, but only five in Spain so far. If the two seats is limiting, don’t worry as Tesla are bringing out the seven seater ‘Model S’ in 2012 which is equally as green as the Roadster with the lines of a Jaguar XF.

Colourful as well as green
Sold then ! Well, all that is needed is to choose a colour for the ‘green’ car. There is wide range of bright exciting exterior moods to pick from. ‘Obsidian Black’ for the real stealth effect through to ‘Glacier Blue’ or ‘Lightning Green’. If worried about pedestrians not hearing the car approaching, a wise choice might be ‘Very Orange’ which is so bright it is practically guaranteed to be seen even round a corner. The interiors are equally wide ranging with nine colours of leather and five of micro fibre. The seats offer very supportive bolsters and a modern lumbar support system. The Tesla Roadster is loaded up with safety features including ABS, front and rear crumple zones, side impact beams, traction control, airbags and all other usual features.

Whether it’s a green bullet of the future or a new Sinclair C5 on steroids that will fizzle remains to be seen, but everyone should be given the chance to test this car as it certainly puts the future of travel in question. Regardless of it being long life or not, one thing is sure about this sports car, it is electric in every sense of the word.

Thousands of classic car lovers took to the sun-drenched streets of Marbella on Sunday as the town hosted its first ever “Classics on Wheels” event, organised by Andreas Ullstein of the American Classic Car Owners Club, Costa del Sol.

Hot wheels

At the weekend, Nueva Andalucia’s Central Plaza buzzed with over 100 vintage motors and their owners as they competed for awards by flaunting their immaculately preserved cars. The event started at 10am, when thousands of classic car owners, their families and enthusiasts enjoyed a delicious breakfast, accompanied by music from one of Marbella’s top DJs at the Centro Plaza in Puerto Banus.
At noon, a fabulous “Downtown Sunday Cruise”, escorted by the local police, gave everyone the chance to marvel at some seriously stunning American and European rarities from the 1920s up to the 1970s. The convoy, drove through the harbour of Puerto Banus, featured an array of classic American Mustangs and Cadillacs, as well as British beauties and Beetles, Jaguars and MGs plus a sexy 70s BMW, some magnificent Mercedes convertibles and lots more. But of course, no convoy would be complete without some mean machines, so Harley Davidson owners took their custom built beasts along for the ride too.

Rock ‘n’ Roll
Meanwhile, traders and vendors wowed the crowds with their unique retro accessories and merchandise then later, Rockabilly band; The Sun Rockets provided the soundtrack to the warm, sunny afternoon. And as the crowd discovered their dancing shoes, the show’s organisers brought the past to life in their fabulous period costumes.

Popular local restuarant, Yanx, offered tasty treats from their USA-style BBQ and the ice-cold beer flowed as the crowd applauded the winners of “Concours de Elegance”and prizes were given. Here are just a few of the winners:

Thanks to all the car owners, their families and the thousands of visitors who turned out for the glorious day of retro madness, Classics on Wheels proved a huge success and we’re already looking forward to next year’s event!

Classic car lovers will be in their element this summer as Marbella sees the first ever ‘Classics on Wheels’ event roll into town. Hosted and organised by the American Classic Car Owners Club, Costa del Sol, this celebration of American vintage motors and their enthusiasts is expected to attract over 4,000 visitors.

A Classic Day Out
On 27 June, Nueva Andalucía’s Central Plaza will be awash with over 150 classic cars and their owners, all battling it out to win awards for the best preserved cars. In association with Marbella Town Hall and 6 other classic car clubs in the region, the event will start at 10am, when visitors can get in gear with a delicious, energy-boosting breakfast, accompanied by music from one of Marbella’s top DJs.

At noon, a spectacular ‘Downtown Sunday Cruise’, escorted by the local police, will give everyone the chance to enjoy the vintage and veteran rarities of all makes and models at first hand, whilst traders and vendors dazzle the crowds with their unique retro accessories and merchandise.

Wheel Good Fun
The American theme is set to continue throughout the day with live music from Rockabilly band, The Sun Rockets, and period outfitted characters, providing some excellent photo opportunities for those looking to capture all the glamour of the past. Popular local café, Yanx will be providing tasty USA-style BBQ treats and ice-cold and shortly afterwards, the judges will reveal the winners of the ‘Concour’s d’Elegance’, when prizes will be given for cars in categories such as ‘Best British Classic’, ‘Best US Classic’ and ‘Best Restored to Original’. There will be a final prize-giving ceremony for the overall ‘Best Car of the Show’ later in the evening.

There is a subscription fee for the ‘Classics on Wheels’ event of just €35 per car (including driver) and only €15 per passenger.

Taking the curvaceous road to Ronda and beyond on a stunningly sunny morning,
the Mini drivers enjoyed every evocative bend and straight as they whizzed
on mass towards Jerez, a town famous around the world for its horse-power,
both in its equestrian stables and on the motor racing track which has held
Formula One Grand Prix races as well as many other  prestigious motoring
events over the years. The journey, which took less than two hours turned many
heads
as the stream of Minis went flying by.

VIP parking had been organised by Mario and the Mini Espana and the cars were
lined up in front of the famous Jerez Circuit Tower with its ‘Tio Pepe’ man
on top looking over the track. All the drivers from Marbella and Malaga were
given race day shirts with Sponsors logos and once at the circuit quickly
found the Mini Challenge Hospitality Suite and Mini Shop. There was little
time before the racing was under way and the pit lane was filled with excitement
and the familiar smells of engine oil and hot rubber.

In this year, in which the ever popular Mini celebrates 50 years as a much-loved
design icon, support for the brand is running higher than ever, and Mini
lovers from around Spain turned out to spur on the small but mighty customized
cars that were featuring in the day’s racing agenda.

Racing Ahead
Guarnieri Concesionarios was behind several races, with a Porsche GT running
in the Campeonato de España de GT. Driver Miguel Amaral and Miguel
A. de Castro took their Porsche 997 to third  place, just a few seconds
off the lead. Meanwhile, Marbella-based racing driver Peter Sundberg,
came 2nd in a Ferrari 430 GT2.

Mini Challenge Race winner-Car 7—New CooperS at the Mini Challenge Hospitality Suite

Only a  clutch of customized Minis took part in the 1st Mini Challenge
in Andalucía, two representing the Guarnieri dealerships in the Mini
Team Guanieri. Drivers Robinson and Fontes put the No 17 Mini through
its paces in the 40 minute race, coming in at 6th place and Marta Suria and
Reyes in the No 9 Mini coming in 7th. Both cars we held up for a large part
of the race by the Silver No 77 car drives by Gomez and his partner.

Parade Laps
Following the Mini Challenge race the cars from Marbella and Malaga were given
the opportunity of driving two laps of the famous circuit and then a photograph
was taken in the pit lane before the various Mini lovers made their way back
along the coast. The day was completed by the fact that many who were speedy
behind the wheel, were back home in time to watch the Brazilian F1 GP from
Interlagos. Congratulations to Jenson Button – 2009 F1 World Champion and
10th Briton to claim the title since Mike Hawthorn in 1958.

A Fashion Extravaganza

he pre-dinner cocktail party was held at the spectacular amphitheatre adjacent
to the hotel’s gardens, and guests were treated to a fashion extravaganza
by Marbella based designer, Patricia Nahmad.   Weaving a tale of
Cinderalla style fantasy, complete with a carriage and handsome prince,
an increasingly glamorous range of frocks and gowns were sashayed down
the grand al fresco catwalk by a line up of gorgeous girls.

Guests then enjoyed a sumptuous feast of 5-star cuisine from the hotel’s accomplished chefs.  Famous
for their flair and panache the Fischer Group could be proud of hosting another
special occasion for Marbella’s gliterrati, and supporting worthy causes through the
work of the Lion’s Club in Marbella.

The one hundred participants, from all five continents, travelled some 1,500
km, competing in 14 special mountain time-trials and three races on the Jerez,
Ascari and Guadix circuits. The list of cars participating represented a gathering
of models from highly prestigious marques such as Alfa Romeo, Ferrari, Lancia,
Aston Martin, Porsche and Jaguar, and the event was hotly contested, with several
cars bearing the knocks of some close racing!  A major innovation this
year was the inclusion of pre-war racing cars manufactured prior to 1945,which
competed in an exclusive category of their own.

Cars, Culture & Cuisine

As well as motoring event the Tour de España is a cultural experience
in which the drivers have an opportunity to enjoy Spain’s architecture,
landscape, traditions and cuisine. During the event this year the teams were
granted the special privilege of a night time visit to the Alhambra Palace.

The prize giving took place in Málaga. The Porsche 906 of  “Mr
John of B” ably partnered by Jean Marc Libes was nearly two minutes ahead
of the Porsche RSR of Emanuel Brigand and Yann Albert. Mr John of B had driven
a sterling, consistent rally to win overall in what was essentially an underpowered
and unfancied car. And the victor, ‘Mr John of B’ ? He is a long time Porsche
enthusiast who is building a brand name on his motor sport success. Jean (hence
the John) Guittard hails from Beziers in Northern France – that’ s
the ‘B’.

There are 40 million blind people in the world. Colors devotes a black-and-white
issue to them. The first colourless Colors, the first Colors you can read or
listen to at home or while out and about. The magazine includes a free, four-language
CD sound-tracked with gypsy music by the blind violinist Tcha Limberger. The
audio version will also be supplied on a usb pen drive for the special issue
directed at leading institutes and foundations for the blind.

Colors 72 explored the sightless side of the world and found out how it is
to be part of a minority in a world order designed for the majority. A world
without colour but rich in nuances, just as losing your sight doesn’t
mean losing the meaning of things. For example, we discover that to Cecilia,
a young world swimming champion, the water changes according to her mood and
the rituals she performs before the race. And Michael, a corporate executive,
describes how he and his co-workers survived the 11 September attacks by walking
down the stairs from the 78th floor.

No sooner had the curtains closed at London Fashion Week, when the crowds
raised their palms to celebrate the ultimate day in any Fashionista’s
diary – Paris Fashion Week! The size zero debate still followed
the waif-like figures down the shiny catwalks as they paraded fabulously colourful
collections from Dolce & Gabbana, Emilio Pucci, Roberto Cavalli to Missoni.

Spring/Summer 2008 saw hemlines raised, cleavages lowered and the decadent
use of romantic prints and textures to create stunning feminine collections.
This season kicked off to a glittering start and sees the return of femme fatal,
1940’s glamour, to contemporary with a rock ‘n’ roll edge.

GLAMOUR
Creativity at its best, Dolce & Gabbana’s artistic theme was stretched
to the limit by metres of silk and tulle hand-painted with roses, peonies,
daffodils and orchids, before being twisted and shaped into wonderful creations
like only Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana know how.

ARMY & NAVY
Blazers, big brass buttons, capes and waistcoats made their way to the catwalks
in the form of a naval and Napoleonic theme. Watch out for the
high street names quick take on the catwalk interpretations. Pick-up a few
staple pieces for the season, like a velvet fitted jacket with brass buttons
and mix and match with existing pieces in your wardrobe to create your own
individual style. Waistcoats with a crisp white shirt is a must-have for this
season’s wardrobe and looks fabulous teamed up with skinny jeans.

BIG KNITS
Knitwear has reached grand proportions with scarves and jumpers oversized.
Be sure to wrap scarves around a couples of times for maximum effect!

LEATHER LINES
The catwalks saw a return to leather, making a big comeback in the high street
stores this season and some stores already selling out of stocks of their
butter soft leather dresses and trousers. The trend leans more towards
sixties cut dresses, slightly above the knee and making it wearable for all
age groups.

LONDON FASHION WEEKEND
If London Fashion Week wasn’t an important enough date in your diary,
this year saw London Fashion Weekend in association with Grazia magazine
open its doors to the public at the London History Museum.

Fabulous designer names such as Juicy Couture, Betty Jackson, Bill Amberg,
Lulu Guiness, to name but a few, set up shop offering their designer
collections at hugely discounted prices to the public. Toni & Guy offered
styling tips, while Elizabeth Arden showed the hottest colours to use on the
face. Skinny Cow Ice-cream provided the perfect respite to the day with a stand
offering free no fat lollies!

The three-day event, which also played host to a fashion show was the perfect
